Default L98 Code 43 problem

My car has developed an intermittent problem, (only happened 3 times this year), where it will throw a code 43 error and run terrible. It seem to happen only when the car gets really hot, and goes away after the car sits for a while. I did get to run a scan on it while it once while in the running in my garage, when reving the motor up, I am showing no knock counts, but does show knock retard up to 19 degrees. Would I still have knock retard with a bad knock sensor if it sends no data, or does this more likely point towards replacing the ESC module? I normally have no codes, am running a custom chip, and have a 160 degree thermostat if that helps.

Is replacing the knock sensor the right place to start?

Car is an '89

Since you are getting knock retard as well as the occasional code, I suspect that the problem is with the ESC module; there is an upgrade P/N on my site along with details.

You might first veify that the electrical connection to the knock sensor is solid; as a loose connection might cause a code though I'm not sure if it would cause knock retard.

Just checking before I order, the part # for the ESC is 16038331? Just wanted to make sure it would work, the parts guy said it was for a "G" body car.

Yes, it's originally for a 'G' body, and YES it will work. I installed one on my 86 a couple of weeks ago. It's recommended to cure false knock conditions and works well as an upgrade too.

GMPARTSDIRECT.COM $45.01 plus $9.00 shipping.

Thanks, I'm going to go ahead and order one then, my local dealer has them for $63.01, which isn't too bad since he can get then either tomorrow or Friday.
