Delayed changeup in auto transmission
The automatic transmission of my 86 C4 has suddenly developed a new habit., When first being driven, it delays changeup of gears until 3200RPM, then slams into the next gear. After ten or fifteen minutes of driving at various speeds, the changeup delay reduces until it becomes normal and smooth. I don't know the transmission well enough to understand what is happening, particularly since it corrects itself each time out. It sounds and feels impressive when she doesn't changeup until 3200RPM. Can anyone explain? Can this harm the transmission?

The very first thing I'd check is the fluid level.
Use the correct procedure, with the trans fluid hot, engine idling and car on level ground.
Low fluid level can cause what you're experiencing.

Thanks Jake, I checked the oil level and it was a bit low. I'll try it on the road later today.
