I have the car back after the having the transmission leak issues and fuel leak issues resolved. It took a while being away and so forth. Ended up costing about $1600 in total, which was pretty good. The transmission feels tighter and the car is chirping in going from 1st to 2nd now.
But .. I took it on the highway last night, I had the auto in D[overdrive] and it hung in maybe 3rd or 2nd up to 3500 revs, that is without holding the foot down. I thought that the D[overdrive] tried to jump into overdrive after it got 40 mph without the pedal being held down.
Before I ring up the folks that replaced the transmission seals I would like to know from the forum, first is that normal in an '87 'vette, and if not, what could be the cause of it?
This is what was replaced during the transmission work; "Converter Pump Bushing, Front Seal, O-ring, Gasket, Pan Gasket, Filter and Lever[sp?] Seal"
Go out, pop the hood, and look at the front drivers side of the intake plenum.
You will notice the 3 or so cables on the throttle body. Right?
Look at the one that goes straight back into a little black adjuster, with a grey button on it. There is a little thing around the tubing just before it goes into the adjuster. Look at how much piping is sticking out around the adjuster. This is your TV cable, it adjusts the mentality of the Transmission. Shift firmness, Kickdown, everything. If its off just a little, you can do harm to the tranny, and make drving a chore.
I pulled mine all the way out, and it shifted way too soft, and wouldnt kickdown hardly at all.
Pushed it in, and it shifted too late, and kicked down too easily.
Put it i nthe middle an finetuned it from there.
Push in the little grey button, and adjust the little stub on the front of tht adjuster ot your likeing, and with the engine off, floor it, to hold the new setting, drive the car and look for a difference.

Cool thanks for the reply. I will have a go at adjusting it.
NO! That is not normal. For $1600.00 you should have received a complete overhaul, with a warranty.
The $1600 was for transmission, fuel tank and a couple of other things. The mob that I got to do it, gave the lowest quote of all the ones I rang. It was $1000 (time and material) for the transmission. Most quotes were 'starting' between $1200 and $1500.
Labor (and overhead) is expensive in Nth Virginia.
But, one thng does concern me here.....
Is it shifting hard from all the gears
If it is,,, you TV cable needs adjusting,,, If it is shifting hard in just one or two gears,,, it is something else.....

If by hard you mean with a noticeable jolt, then yes all gears are shifting hard. It only appeared to be the 3rd to OD that decided to hold to 3500 rpm on the highway. It was doing about 58 pmh with 3200 rpm, so I am not certain that it was even 3rd. It sounded like it was really tall in the gear.
I took out at lunch for a spin, but couldnt replicate the problem of not changing until 3500 rpm. But I didnt take it out on the highway, not enough that I could wind it out like that. I will take it on the same road tonight and see if I can replicate the issue.
Adjust the TV cable first, if that doesn't do it try changing your trans fluid. If it's been a while since your last fluid change you may have some crud built up in you're valves making them stick a little. change you're fluid, drive for a little while making sure it runs through all the gears, change it again. see if that helps.

ANOTHER non post reader. Do you really think a shop performed the following:
This is what was replaced during the transmission work; "Converter Pump Bushing, Front Seal, O-ring, Gasket, Pan Gasket, Filter and Lever[sp?] Seal"
And didn't put new fluid in it??? The filter is even in the list!

RACE ON!!!
I'm sure they did, however, there are a hundred diferend places that old fluid stays trapped and doesn't drain when it's changed. Each valve is one such place. The only way to get CLEAN fluid in your transmission is to change it, drive a while to mix the new with the old, change it again. You may even have to repeat the process again depending on how bad the old fluid was. It doesn't take but a drop of sludge to make a valve stick.
