my dad was driving my car the other day and he busted my emergency brake thing. all the plastic flew off of the handle. not sure what else is busted but i can make it work but it is hard to do. i'd like to just get a new assembly if i could. it has always been pretty hard to pull up and i had to hold it close to the door to get it back down. how can i fix this? new assembly or is there a tension adjustment somewhere? i want it to still hold good but it gets hard to pull before it reaches it's first click. please give me some options on what to do and how to replace it. also please tell me where i can get what i need. thanks guys.
I don't know if the emergency brake is still available from GM. The emergency brake on my 96 broke a plastic piece in the ratcheting assembly when the car was about a year old. I don't like having to put on the brakes to set the emergency brake, I like the way my 85's works, just pull it up and the emergency brake is on. Your 95 and my 96 uses the rear disc brake pads to stop movement of the disc where as my 85 uses the method of having separate brake shoes like the C3's. I believe the C5 went back to this type of emergency brake, not sure. Anyway don't blame your POP, your 95's emergency bake is not user friendly in my opinion. I took my 96 to the dealership for warranty replacement and changed out the complete emergency brake assembly in the parking lot myself. I just did not want to leave my LT4 for such a simple replacement. The service rep was satisfied with my changeout and signed off on the replacement.
Bought mine of ebay for cheap. Twenty five or thirty bucks, can't remember. I had to remove driver seat. I switched mine out without even having to go under car to loosen adjustment cable. I installed cable first then muscled the new one back into position to be bolted down.
1st of all...check right up the road from ya at Mulliken's for the replacement handle. He's just outside of Anderson, so he'd be real convenient for ya. Phone (864)845-0838, and ask for David. He's helped me out with parts on occasion.
I'd also back the tension off a bit on the e-brake cable. That will probalby solve the tension problem ;)
