I'm sure that someone has asked this before, but would like some input on stall converters from the L98 owners. What stall are you using 2500, 2800, or 3000. What brand you are using, what size cam and if your happy with it.
Thanks any input would be helpful. :steering:
I just recently had my tranny rebuilt to performance specs and swapped a ProTorque 2400rpm stall conevrter in. HUGE difference, even on my stock 2000rpm stall converter. Should be even more profound difference on an '86+ automatic L98.
The nose of the car lifts when I get on it from a stop like never before, it is not too draagy for in-town driving (I like to drive the car whenever it is nice out during the week too).
I decided not to get a higher (2800) stall converter as it would make it a bit more draagy for in-town driving, and besides, I don't race THAT much at the track. :D
I have a 2500 stall lockup Hughes converter, I'm not sure I know exactly how to launch it yet, but I think I might have been happier with a 28-3000. I'm running the 219 cam and SR. Overall I'm happy with it, but even with the shift kit it doesn't hit as hard as I'd like in second. I think I have some issues with the TV cable that may be part of the problem and I don't have a final tune yet.
I have read somewhere and I don't know how true this is, is that some 85 and 86 vette's came with converters that flashed around 2500 thats why I am favoring a 2800 stall. I not sure on the brand yet, I want one thats streetable. :auto:
Your 86 came with a ~2000 rpm TC. They all did in 85 and 86, probably 84 but i'm not quite sure.
I wouldnt have one over 2400 in an L98 because of the powerband, and because over that the tranny wont feel quite right, it'll feel like its slipping (which is what its doing). Thats just a personal preference thing.
You also dont want one over the torque peak, which for most of us is about 3000rpm or so.

I agree with Vader, I would not go over 2500 rpms stall on a TPI car.
My $200 convertor has been running awesome for the last 4 years.
Well its sounds like most are very happy with no more than a 2500 stall and thats what I will be looking for. I checked out the Pro torque converter web site it looks like they make a quality product. A bit hard a the wallet though. I have a 86 conv. with only about 29,000 on it and its all stock except the Magnaflow Catback system I just put on. It made a big difference on my stocker. I'm looking into doing a complete lingenfelter package, I already have the superram plenum, runners, manifold and had a hard time finding the lingenfelter headers because they have been discontinued, but I found a good used set that I will have recoated. :hurray:
