It seems that all of the new computers are running xp. Can these computers be used to scan a 93 vette? Is there anything I should be looking at when buying one for this purpose. Also, it wouldnt be just for scanning, I would have to justify I need it for my work as well.
Diacom will not work with XP/2000. I use Ease which is. I'm pretty sure most of the other windows based ones are compatible as well. It is the DOS programs that won't work.
Im running Datamaster with XP. Scanning will be much easier if you make sure you get a computor with an RS232 port. I have to use a USB adaptor and it often has trouble communicating.
Hey guys,
thanks for the advise. I thought I had heard that some of the programs didnt work well with anything newer then 95 or 98 windows. This will make looking for a computer a lot easier. Right now, I am wanting to get started taking readings etc. and then start learning what all it means.
Windows XP will allow you to run programs under Win 3.1, Win 95, Win 98 or Win 2000. All you do is right click the program icon, open Properties, click the Compatibility tab and select "Run this program in compatibility mode for " whatever Windows mode you need. Works great!

Careful with that statement! Windows XP does not allow direct access to system resources and many of the older DOS based programs require it to run right. Even in compatibility mode it will not work as the kernal will not allow direct access.
Compatible doesn't mean 100%, works for most progs, but not all. I'd verify with a member who runs the prog in question and see if they got it running on XP before you buy/install
I'm running Datamaster and Tunercat software, using Windows XP. Just make sure the laptop has a serial port, my first didn't and I couldn't use the data logging/tuning software with a USB port.

If you are looking for a laptop that is of excellent quality and reasonable price I'd suggest http://www.IBM.com. Go to their refurbished sales page and look at the used Thinkpads. IBM gets a lot of laptops in excellent shape from businesses that upgrade and they resell them after refurbishing them to factory spec. They warrant the laptops for 3 months. You also get full factory recovery and OS disks for it just like new.
I bought a T-20 Thinkpad from IBM last year and I couldn't be happier with it. The current used T-20's are now under $700. My T-20 has both a serial and a USB port. The built in "Ultra-bay 2000" allows you to hot swap in another hard drive (which can also be used to boot from). You can hot swap a CD-RW/DVD drive, a floppy, or add a second battery. With 2 batteries I can go 7 hours.
The used Thinkpads from IBM are a real bargain in my opinion. I use mine to run the entire Ease Pro Scan Tool Suite for GM/Ford/Chrysler/Toyota.
