Default L98 Fuel Pump Replacement

How much fuel can remain in the tank when replaceing the fule pump (1986)?

It realy isn't an issue. When I had to replace mine the tank was nearly full.

BTW, when you pull the assembly, note the orientation of the pickup screen on the bottom so you can install the new one the same way.

I have pulled the assembly many times. It doesn't matter how much fuel is in there

If you shine a flashlight into the tank while the assembly is out you may see what looks like a darker colored layer at the bottom crease of the tank. That is condensation/water/contamination. With a small plastic hose you can syphon that crud out of the tank real easily. As already said, it doesn't matter the fuel level when you do this, although more fuel in the tank makes the syphoning faster (if you even need to do it).

Actually, the more full the tank, the safer. It is the vapors that explode. A more fill tank has less air space for the vapors. With a full tank, the resultant fire will last longer, due to the greater supply of fuel, but the explosion will be less severe. Does THAT make you feel any better???
