Progress report on 1993 auto w /3.73 gears. In case you are wondering or considering 3.73 gears for yor A4....forget about it... THEY ROCK. I've had them on for a couple of months now and if you like "seat of your pants" acceleration and getting sideways on second gear. Go for it!. I have listened to several guys complain about it being too much gear and all... B.S.!!! , I ran it to the track two weeks ago and averaged 24M.P.G. all the way down there @ 80 M.P.H 2,800. R.P.M . The speedo didn't turn out right but, I can subtract 12 from my speed pretty quick so, It don't matter. BEST MOD YET! Precision gear with the thick gears and the install kit and no whine. Well, just a itsy, bitsy, little one. If you listen real close. Anyho, great fun. I highly recommend you talking your wives into it!
Nice! I agree I have 3.73s love them, lots of fun. Wish I was getting your mileage. I'm getting a max of about 19mpg on the hiway. But then I think some of that has to do with my right foot problem.
Sounds great guys, I can't wait to install my 3.91 gears. How much of a gain in the 1/4 did you guys experience? My friend has the 3.73 and the car felt so much better, it felt like a real muscle car and I felt the difference in torque through the rear wheels.
How did you correct your speedo? When I had 3.54 gears I was able to get it correct with the gears from the dealer. With the 4.09 gears I cant correct it with gears. Im going to have to use a digital conversion box. Your MPG reading on your dash will be off if the speedometer is off. I do agree, that gears make these cars much more fun exspecially if you are starting with 2.59 gears.
I paid around 350.00 for the gears (Precision gears) and the install kit was around 100.00. I have a dana 36 with a 2.59 gear case; use the "thick gears" to go with a 3 series gear. (eg. 3.73). Gears are the best bang for the buck. You just have to get used to not nailing it on take off unless you want the little orange light winking at you!

What other mods do ya have? I ask as I'm having a built D36 made and was deciding 3.53 vs 3.07 (This is a 383 Superram, I"m making a not-quite-fully-tuned 450 ft-lb tq at the crank)
I figgure any higher than 3.53 and all I'm doing is turning the tires into big black crayons.
Yeah, your right you would definately be marking up the streets with that set-up. Myself, I just got the hot-cam, cc 1.6 RRs and some port work. I wanna go with longtubes and AFR 190's next. You might try BFG drag radials. I have a new set of 315's and 275's in the garage waitin until I get done marking up my streets. It's hard to quit playin when you can!. My wife likes donuts the best. I am a lucky guy.

Well, it's gonna be interesting, I'm coming from 2.73's It's Z06 fast with the wrong gears as it is.
I've been thinking real hard about swapping to 3.54s lately.
Not a bad gear.......but for god sake do the D44 conversion first you'll save yourself ..time... energy...and money.....and the thirst for more can be satisfied without fear or compromise..............peace!!!!!!!!

With that Superram you will melt the tires with either gear set. I'm not a 1/4 miler (I go right/left/up/down) but I would think that one of your deciding factors is going to be what gear and RPM you're at in the traps.

I'm not a drag racer either, I like the twisties too. Actually the goal with THIS car was to make an unstoppable street car. Look over and if your opponent isn't using slicks, it'll be a good race.
Building the car THAT way has actually hurt it as a racer -- it's faster than NHRA wants a ragtop to be, and it generates too much heat for any amount of time on the roadcourse. (That'll change with the oil/tranny cooler sitting in my dining room)

I love mine. A4...D36. The guy I bought the car from had them put in. Not sure how he readjusted speedo but it seems right on. It took a little while to get used to stop and go in traffic But they definatly rock! I am a lead foot so I 'm not gettin' the numbers milage wise but who freakin' cares about gas milage! I love leavin' in a cloud of smoke!
