My '94 MN6 (which, incidentally, was for sale at the time) broke down while merging onto the expressway. Normal throttle, normal conditions. I heard a loud "tick tick tick tick tick" that was synchronized with engine speed for about 30 miles previous, sounded like it was coming from the passenger side of the motor. As I was passing 30mph the car started sounding like a tractor and was much louder than before. I grounded the pins on the ALDL connector and came up with Codes 44 and 64.
The car is currently in my driveway (thank god for AAA) as I did not want to race to the nearest mechanic/dealership and proceed to get fisted. I have video/sound of the exhaust, and I will try and figure out how to post it. The car sounds like absolute hell. No idiot lights, gauges appear to function normally and idle characteristics same. Did not attempt to drive.
I have basic tools/electrical equipment and limited mechanical skill. I will not be tearing down any engines. I want to know if there is a way to discern the problem without scattering engine parts across my driveway. I must start simple. What are some thoughts and opinions?
Also, who knows good mechanics in the chicagoland area?
I without more info and given the ticking sound, Id start by maing sure the internals are sound. What happens when you start the car now? How did the car actually die? It really could be anything given your description, hopefully its just an exhaust problem, maybe an O2 sensor popped out? Worst case, maybe some kind of internal problem. Send the video/sound to my addy and I will give it a listen.
My 87 ran like crap going to work on an expressway one day like it was running on 4 cylinders and got real HOT! Called my mechanic and after work it drove ok over to his house. BAD ECM!
