the cruise control doesnt work on my 96. When its switched to the on posistion and i try and set it nothing happens. It used to work perfectly, and never gave me problems, the fuse is good, all wire connections are good and the vaccum hoses are connected. The throttle linkage is also good. Could this be a faulty switch?
Could be switch. Could be servo. Make sure servo cable is taught but not too tight with throttle body completely closed. Also, some models haveTraction Control and Acceleration Slip Regulation which interact with anti-lock brakes and Engine management systems. Therefore, I unfortunetly other than cable adjustment am not qualified to help much on these other areas..these are areas where I would have to throw in the towel and see a dealer ..Thank God (knock on wood) mine hasn't had any probs there because I HATE throwing in the towel!! I wish I could be of more help but since no one else had a reply I just thought I'd give my 2 cents. Good luck.
When this happened to my '94 it was the vacuum/brake switch (that's actuated off the brake and/or clutch pedals) that went out of adjustment. The retaining bracket that holds the switch in position is plastic and eventually breaks. Replacement was ~$7. Before '93 the bracket was metal - what was GM thinking?
BTW, from what I've read the servos rarely fail, so chances are good that the problem is a switch at the brake pedal (clutch pedal too if you have a manual), fuse, a vacuum hose (they're two) or the connection at the servo.
With the above two comments. I did find a bad servo last year though. It wasn't actually a bad servo, but the problem was in the servo. One of the thin wires that goes from the servo connector to one of the coils inside the servo was broken. It was an early C4. So they do fail, but rarely. Just for grins, when running down the road, put your foot under the brake pedal and lift at the same time you try to engage the cruise. If you have a manual, try the same with the clutch pedal. If the switch is out of adjustment but close, this will verify a switch/actuator issue.
Servo went south on my old 84 (RIP) hence my suggestion..but I am more inclined to agree that it's probably a pedal switch or vaccume or cable adjustment issue since those are the more common.
If your car is a manual, check one more thing. I thought I had cruise control issues on my 96 as well - sometimes it would work, sometimes it wouldn't. Since there is no deadpedal on C4s, I sometimes lightly rest my left food on the clutch pedal while cruising at highway speeds. I'm used to automatics where touching the brakes deactivates the CC - on manuals, either pedal will do it. Make sure you're not resting on the clutch before you throw any money into it!
I know, it sounds simplistic and stupid, but it's possible!
