My 87 Coupe was in dire need of new mufflers and rear Y-pipe. The passenger's side muffler had a big hole in it and the Y-pipe had numerous holes in it. It sounded like a muffler-less Harley. BUT NO RESONANCE!!!!!!!
I ordered from Mid America Motorworks a Dynomax
Y-pipe with balance tube and a set of Dynomax Performance Mufflers (Part Number 603-406). It was easy to install and they sound good. BUT.......the resonance is killing me. From 1600 to about 2200 rpm it is unbearable.
My car is practically stock with only a few mods: KN filter, cut lid, coolant bypass, Hypertech Thermomaster chip, TB airfoil, no cats, 3:07 rear end. It is an automatic, by the way.
You may want some Dynomat shielding for the rear compartment area, you can get a crossover pipe welded into the Y, you can add exhaust tips that go past the bumper, or you can plug up one pipe on each side when you get on the hwy.
Otherwise, youll either have to live with it (likely) or change to a different exhaust that you can stand better.
I got the muffler Eliminators and I just let the muffler shop install them. When I picked up the car, the tips stuck out about 4" past the bottom lip of the bumper. I didn't like it at first but there's no resonates at all and the look grew on me.
Also, when I put in new rear carpets, I left old carpet in and put the new over it on the flat area. Since I did the carpets first before the Eliminators, I don't know if it contributes to the cure or not.

Re: RESONANCE (BIG JIM 54)
I got lucky I think...

I've heard others say that adding tips and extending them out like that will help. I intend to try it soon myself.
Do you have a brand name for the plugs you used? Doesn't the rubber melt in the plugs? Also, how did you find 3 1/2"? I have Magnaflows on my 93 and would like to kill a little resonance if I can.
