Looking for help from experienced C4 owners. I'm new to C4s only owning C3s in the past. I recently bought a 92 with 6 speed transmission. When shifting, particuarly at lower rpm, the transmission seems noisy. It's not really a grinding sound, but doesn't sound normal. Although I'm not sure what normal is. Any ideas? Thanks
Its normal...nothing to worry about. It has to do with the cut of the gears, I believe that they fixed this problem in the later C4's to lessen the noise. Welcome to C4's
be glad you didn'y have the 89 i believe its the only year with straight cut gears
Nope, the had them till 94 I believe. I know until 92 cause mine has straight cut gears also. The problem is when they went to the angle cut gears in later years to stop the noise, the tranny lost some strength.
I love the sound of straight cut gears. Every time someone says "what's that whinning noise", I smile and say "it's the transmission. Isn't it great - sounds just like a race car."

My '96 has a pretty noisy 6-speed. Changing the lubricant to Castrol 10W-60 helped somewhat, but I think it's just the nature of the beast. I consider it a fair trade for the robustness of the ZF.

Re: 6 speed noise (Brian Blum)
The ZF6 in my 77 whines as well. I have asked a number of people and they all said it is perfectly normal, for a while I was afraid the clutch wasn't disengaging/engaging properly but she shifts fine and runs like a champ

Mine is noisy, and the alum flywheel really makes it loud, especially under 2200 rpm.
