I have a 1984 Coupe with crossfire engine. Yesterday I was driving down the highway and the "Check Engine" indicator came on. I looked at the temp and oil pressure and both were fine. The motor seemed to be running fine, but within a mile or so I began to loose power and the engine died. I could restart the engine, but it would die after running for a few seconds. I thought I smelled a sour fuel (like flooded) smell when I attempted to restart. One other weird thing, I looked at the voltage reading and it indicated 7 volts. However, the motor was turning over like the battery was fine. Any ideas?

If your volts say 7 maybe your alternator is bad? I would see what code set off the check engine light to find the problem!
I don't have access to a computer to check codes, so I will probably take to the Chevrolet dealer for diagnosis. Thanks
You don't need a computer to check the codes...all you need is a jumper wire in the com connection down by your right leg (knee actually)...Since I am not sitting in my 84 right now...I can't remember the wires to jump (CF members jump in here) but you basically jump the connections- turn the key to the click before actual crank\start and count the flashing "Check Engine Lights" they will repeat over and over again...post the results on the board and someone can dig into a code book for you...
To check the codes set in an '84, jump the "A" and "B" terminals of the ALDL, with the key "ON" and the engine "OFF". "A" is the furthest to the right in the upper row of connectors. "B" is next to "A" on the left. The "check engine" light will flash a code "12", three time to confirm the ECM is functional. That's one longer flash followed by two short flashes. Then it will flash any/all stored codes, three time each. Finally, when all the codes have been displayed, it will flash code "12" again and start over. We can help you identify the codes as to what sensor they pertain to, but you're going to need a service manual to trouble shoot the actual problem. Very often the code doesn't indicate a "bad" sensor, just that the readings it sent didn't match what the ECM expected. Go here: http://www.helminc.com
