Default Carre Install

Was reading some of the posts on TECH do I really have to remove the complete batwing assy. just to change the carrier unit? Also will the 3:07 carrier bolt up to my 2:59 batwing assy. thats allready in the car now? I know it says to use RTV Sealant for the rear end cover guess it wouldn't hurt to get some gasket material and make one just to be safe? I've never installed a carrier in a vette before so any help would be greatly appreciated THANKS

Installing the carrier into the diff housing isn't exactly the same as on other GM axles - the spreader tool that GM has (and will rent or loan you - if you are good buddies with the guy at the service dept...) is really the way to go. The end play on the stub axles is Critical - it Has to be (nearly) zero play or the car will drive itself all over the road. There is NO gasket for the batwing - and you don't really want to make one for it - you're just asking for a leak that you otherwise wouldn't have. The batwing / differential cover, along with the housing itself, is a stressed member of the suspension assembly - put it together the way it's Supposed to be if you don't want to get into trouble with it! Try getting a copy of the Helms manual (otherwise known as the bible) - it'll help you avoid silly mistakes...

Can ya tell me wat ya mean by Stub Axels (half shafts)? or are they the yokes that come off the side of the carrier? THANKS MUCH FOR THE HELP BILL
