K & N air filter cleaning schedule
I've had my car for about 4 years now and can't remember cleaning the air filter element. I know I'm overdue for it, so should I buy the K & N cleaner and oiler or should I use something else?
How much of an improvement should it yield and would it show up as a funky reading in DataMaster?

Yea, it's probably time to start thinking about servicing that filter. 
I only trust the recharging kit; I clean mine several times a year.
After waiting this long to clean the air filter, you will likely see your WOT O2 sensor valves jump by 100mV or so.

The procedure is included with the recharge kit.
Overoiling is to be avoided as it can take it's toll on the MAF sensors, especially if you have removed the screens.

Wash with the cleaner and water (reverse flush it with the hose)
Let dry, re-oil until its a light shade of pink. I usually leave it out for a day or two so it poses no danger to the MAF.

i suggest maintenance every time it getsdirty DAH
and yes funky reading in data master also suggests fuel/air ratio to be rich

I clean my K&N's about every 50,000 miles. Seriously.

Bought the kit, cleaning in process.
To anyone who is going to buy the kit, also buy a soft brissle brush. It does not say this on the outside of the box. Had to make another trip.
I looked at it and it looked very dirty. I have the open lid mod done. Just from tapping it against the floor, a lot of dirt came out. I can't say much came out with the brush, but that's what the instructions tell ya to do.
On the front instructions, it says nothing about getting the filter wet, but on the back it does. SO, I tapped dirt out , used brush and wetted with cold water. I then sprayed on cleaner (liberally) and let soak for 10 minutes.
I then washed from inside out (clean side facing up, you'll know when you see it) and holy cow, talk about a lot of dirt and red dye!
I tapped out excess water and am letting it dry in the sun . Don't know how long it'll take, but hopefully not too much longer ( I'll give it 2 hours)

Now that ya have the filter out for cleaning ya might as well take the air intake hose off your throttle body and clean inside it. Open the TB by hand all the way get yourself some TB and air intake cleaner and a old toothbrush. Spray it inside and scrub all around with the toothbrush and watch all the crud come out. Spray some more in there till it runs out of the throttle body clean. Your Vette will run alot smoother

K&N instructions say clean filter every 50K miles..BS . Clean it every 10K miles at least. I drive in normal conditions, mostly freeway and mine was dirty after 10K miles...so dirty that after cleaning it i swear i felt more power. Someone here help me out...why it says on the box that the dirtier it gets the better works ? SOUNDS LIKE THE BIGGER BS EVER..!!

I know I'll get flamed, but the OEM dry filter actually filters the air better than a K&N, but the K&N will give you better flow than a paper filter. I think I'm going back to the paper filter when this K&N gets dirty.
