Inaccurate odometer reading- what would cause it?
I'm interested in buying a 1991 convertible from a small dealer in town. He says he bought it at an auction a couple of months ago(carfax confirms) with the odometer reading about 1000 miles, but his carfax report shows that there are at least 175,000 up until 2001. There really isn't any other activity on the report to give me any insight to this problem. I don't want to buy a $10,000 piece of crap. What would cause this to happen? What should I look for on the car or other resources to help?

If someone didn't illegally "adjust" the reading then it's most likely that the dash was replaced. In the latter case, to be legal, there must be a paper trail.

A quick look at autotrader shows that you can get a 91 vert with 80-90k for $10k.
So why would you want a car with _at_least_ 175k and a questionable history?

Thanks guys, I have since convinced myself that I'm not gonna make an offer on this car. I'll just keep looking around the area for something that is in my budget.
