Default A/C Engagement

This thing is really weird...
I have a 91 coupè equipped with Automatic A/C.
As long as I use it blowing air to the defroster, ricirculation and both down and front vents I can hear and feel the compressor kicking in.
But If I push the button that make the air blow either towards down or front I can feel that the air is correctly directed but, at the same time, the compressor does not kick in.
Why?
Another question...this winter, with a temperature of 5 degrees celsius or less the ricirculation funcion did not engage. Why?

Thanks guys..

I will have to check my book on how to test the climate control.

As for the 5 degree issue - that is a factory setting. In the states, it's 40* F.

A/C refigerent pressures at temps or 50 (10C) are generally too low to close the contacts in the low pressure switch and the compressor won't engage. Engine heat will raise them, but if the air blowing across the evaporator core isn't heated, the system may cycle or the compressor may remain off for long period of times - otherwise it's going to ice over or it just isn't going to work. I'm going to guess that GM disables the recirc function at low outside air temps on your year to keep this from happening (excessive cycling) so that at these temps, you still get the dehumidifying benefits of a/c; ie - defrost, with the added benefit of better idle control.
