My steering column is loose from side to side at the tilt joint. I can move the steering wheel from side to side in all tilt positions. Anyone had this problem? Any ideas?
So that causes the steering wheel to move side to side? Is it a safety issue, or just an annoyance? Also, judging from what I've seen, removing the steering column requires removing the face of the dash, correct? Any tips before I tackle this monster?
Thanks!
I am not sure how it's done in the early C4s, but it ain't that bad.
2 bolts under the dash, 2 bolts on the fire wall, 1 bolt to the linkage, a few wires.
what causes it are those aforementioned little pins I was refering to. They wear out. Is it a safety issue? Damned right it is... sloppy steering is sloppy steering.
The slop is caused by getting out of the car and using the wheel as a support device. My 84 had the same problem. I pulled the steering column and took it apart only to have the ball bearings fall all over the floor. I went ahead and replaced the column with one from a vette bone yard. Its been fine for over 15 months.
Good luck with the vette!
