Default questions about clicking noises

hi all

i have a question about noises from the engine

ive fighted against them since i have the car, also had the engine out to make some mods, aso

all the bearings are new, in spec, no cats, new lifters, properly adjusted

when the engine is cold, i have the typical "cam exhaust sound" right and left of the car....

as the engine gets warmer, at the left side a clicking noise starts..
the car performes very well, pulls hard, use no oil

there are no (visible) leaks from the headers, all gaskets are new..

when i listed to the oil pan (engine warm) with a stethoscope no unusual sounds, no ratling, aso

the noise seems to occur upwards, region:head-headers, but sure no valve train problems, as all parts are new, and its quiet under the valve covers

can you help me out??

many thanks

Are you sure it isnt injectors, they'll tick like crazy.

hi..

also had the idea..the noise is just in the right side, and only when its warm

its most audible near the side fenders...or is it an exhaust noise caused by the cam? i have the typical cam sound left-right in the exhaust, but right side is overlayed with the noise..i have this noise for 3 years now, didnt get better nor worse...

thank you

I've read the PCV Valve can make a clicking noise if it's gone bad... have you checked that?

anybody?

would be real interesting what this will be...

i hope its not a bearing, but thats almost impossible...i´ve heard the sound a dead bearing makes, and its not what my vette does...

i dont think its a wrist pin, since they float nicely in the piston, and had no play in them...

also, makes a puff of smoke on start up, but ive seen this on almost any vette..ive also new valve stem seals in it, but the exhaust seals are stock style umbrella ones, they jump up and down with the valve stem

any opinions??

im a bit frustrated..did a whole engine rebuild-upgrade and cannot get rid of this noise..

thank you

I have the same EXACT noise on my '86. I just started hearing it yesterday. Sounds like it's coming from somewhere in the vicinity of the #2 cylinder, but I couldn't pinpoint it with a stetoscope either. I thought maybe injectors, but this souns is a lot louder than the injector ticking before. Sounds almost like it could be valvetrain, but it didn't get any louder when I took the oil fill cap off.
Let me know if you figure it out.

Could be the compressor, bad compressor CLutch, or bearing?

Take the accessory drive belt off, and run it for just an instant to eliminate all the accersorys. Alt, Comp, pumps...everything!

Does it get faster with increased RPMS?

Mine is not coming from the front, it's coming from the head area on the passenger side. I know it's not the compressor since mine doesn't work right now

Could still be exhaust related even though you have new headers and gaskets. When things warm up they expand and then the tick gets more audible. Snug those new headers up if you haven't already. I had a symptom like you describe on my old 84 (rip) and it was a new header gasket that I hadn't snugged up after a little break in period. Just a thought.

You (flyersfan1088) may have a different prob if you've already torqued but it still cant hurt. I just noticed that Corvette90 said he had just put on new header gaskets recently and thought maybe this might help him if he hasn't already done it.

I just got my headers on last weekend. I've retorqued once(yesterday). I'll investigate further tomorrow.

ok so far so good, first many thanks for your replies

talked with a friend of mine who build several V8 engines, and he stated...

it could also be from the design of the stock shorty headers in combination with my cam or maybe also a slight exhaust leak

he also said, not a bearing, as this knocks, low oil pressure...

i notice this noise only at warm idle, but disappears under load

definitely not a wrist pin, since i had the engine out, and the were nice...

maybe just a bad luck in my case , to have possible exhaust gas flow noises...

i dont think the valves, because no noise under the valve covers...

many thanks
