Well i bought the vette on saturday, and have since but on all new rotors/pads ($450) and new tires ($500). So finally i got a chance to drive it today.. For a little while. I took it out and its been idleing wierd. It idles around 700 rpm, and then drones down to 400, i see my check gauges light come on, and just as it's about to die, it kicks back up to 700 RPM. Thinking it was a vacuum leak, i checked all the hoses. Nothing. Then finally after about 3 hours of driving i get my SES light. So i run over to AutoZOne (Good friend is the manager) and he gets out the diag. key. Throws a code 32. EGR valve. So i open the hood and start to look for the EGR valve. I finally found it, and you all know where it is.. heh.. Now about getting the TPI system off.. How hard is it? I mean, im pretty sure this is the LAST of my problems (crosses fingers) Any advice? Should i just clean the old EGR valve or replace it ($45) and if the TPI is too hard to get off, what would you estimate labor wise? THANKS GUYS!! I hope to start driving this car (w/o worries) soon!
Welcome to the Forum and congrats on your new Corvette. You are going to need a service manual. Go to: www.helminc.com I have to assume you are new to computer cars. The only way the ECM can indicate the EGR, is through it's electrical connections. Even if the EGR is shot and/or leaking like a sieve, the ECM wouldn't know it. Repairing the EGR (replacement or cleaning) may very well cure drivability problems, but THAT isn't what set the code. Actually, an EGR malfunction can, and will set other codes. That is why the service manual is so important...for proper trouble shooting. It will soon pay for itself by allowing YOU to do repairs and by saving you from buying unneeded parts. Good luck, and...
Yeah, i picked up a Chiltons AND Haynes manual the day i got the car, and have just started reading each one about EGR replacment.. It doesnt seem too difficult.. But it scared me at first, just seeing where the EGR was. So your saying the the EGR didnt throw the code? If it wasent the EGR, care to take a guess at what it could have been? I'll probablly end up doing the EGR just to be safe, because like you said, it may solve my driveability problems.. Any other input? Thanks.
Because it was an EGR code, it had to be something in the EGR wiring circuit. Likely the EGR solenoid. I am not very familiar with those "aftermarket" manuals you bought. The Helms is the GM factory service manual. Helms prints it for Chevy. The trouble shooting, diagnostic, charts will save you a lot of money if you follow them. It does a LOT more than guide you through changing a part. It helps you change the RIGHT part.
Hm... Damn, another $30.00 for a book.. heh. Okay thanks, i'll pick one of those up. But if you were a betting man, what part would you replace to hopefully solve the drivability problems and the SES light? Thanks again CFI-EFI, you've been a great help!
EDIT: Ouch... $105.00 for a book.. Jeez.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but triple that figure. That is why I gave you the link: www.helminc.com I doubt you'll find one laying around for sale. Sometimes you will see them for sale in the parts for sale section and on eBay.

I would NOT replace ANY part unless I had a pretty good idea it was the problem. The first thing *I* would do is disconnect and plug the vacuum to the EGR and observe the reactions.

I just ordered the shop manual from Helminc.com for my `87 for $81.95 including shipping about 10 mins. ago. It even looks like they are giving me two electrical diagram manual supplements.
