patching sidewall of tire?
There is a gash in the sidewall of my front tire...it looks almost like someone slashed it. the tire is not flat. the gash is about an inch long. Is there a way this can be patched? the tire is almost new. I don't want to have to pay for a new tire. the tire shop says they wont patch a sidewall. can i use a patch kit and somehow fix it?

When I had a tire gash they put a tube inside of it temporarily until the new tire arrived. A tire with a gash in the sidewall is generally unfixable, if it is fixed, it's temporary and you should NEVER trust it at high speeds... that's what I was told....

You can't fix or patch a sidewall. At least you can get away with only buying 1 tire as the others are new.
I know it seems wasteful to discard a near new tire, but your safety is the most important concern. I'm in the car rental business, and we discard dozens of nearly new tires every month. It's a shame to have to do so, but there is NO safe way to patch a sidewall, and a blowout can be catastrophic.
Absolutely replace the tire! I used to work at a tire dealer and there is no possible way to fix a sidewall. We would even get people that wanted us to patch a puncture that was close to the sidewall (on the edge of the sidewall and tread area) and we would NEVER attempt it as they do not hold. As noted above by some very wise people... replace the tire and be glad you noticed the gash before you drove on it and it blew out. Catastrophic is actually a mild word to use for the results that can occur from a blow out of a sidewall at speed.
