Just wondering if the IAC is a plunger or screw type operation.....and should I be able to move it by hand when its out of the car.....I have mine out because my car wont stay running at idle all of a sudden and its not really dirty in there but I cant move the pintle with my fingers even a little bit. Should I replace it
It's an '89. I thought it would be a good idea to test it by pulling it out of the tb, connecting it to the harness and jumpering the A&B terminals to fully extend it. I figured that way I would know it was working. Well that didn't work out to well, it shot the pintel and spring across the driveway It seems to go back in and turn a few times. Did I break it, or will screwing it back in make it work again? Also bogus what do you mean when you say you have to turn it to set it?

I think you broke it
Good news is a new one, is only about $ 50.00 and it is amazzing the difference a new one makes
Some are "screw in" and others are "press in, jiggle out"
I believe 88 and 89are the " jiggle" type. Hold the base firmly and "jiggle" the pintle back and forth while either pushing in or pulling out.
The correct adjustment is the tip of the pintle should be 1 1/8" from the collar that the gasket sits on. Make sure ignition is off when you remove. this is the "at rest" adjusted length.
I had to adjust mine twice in the last few years, it got over extended by 1/8" and caused all kinds of problems the books don't even mention, including MAF 33, limp home and others.

ok, I wasn't aware that the early ones were push/jiggle. Sorry. I thought they were all screw types.
