I need to know what could cause this. I give it a lot of pedal and when i try to get it from first to second it just grinds, but if i drive it regular usually no problem, I am also having problems with reverse, I must slowly put it in or it wont grab, and first will slip every now and than when I try to put it in gear. I have a new clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate. Im thinking my tranny may be giving out, any suggestions?
What year is your car? I have a 93 6spd LT1 w/ 45,000 miles
Mine occasionally grinds into 2nd. I first off replaced the clutch. No luck. Next I replaced the clutch hydraulics. No luck either.
The nice thing about your case, is you say it does it going into reverse too. Which might be a sign that its not your synchros and more a clutch/clutch hydraulics problem.
Fix the problem soon or else you wil damage your synchros (assuming the synchros arent whats causing the grind to begin with).
I had the same problem with my Richmond 6-speed, after a few years of abuse. I put GM Syncro Mesh Fluid in, after draining the old stuff out, and it stopped it.
My 96LT4 sometimes grinds in reverse only. Actually, I'll put 'er in reverse, start to back up, and then it pops halfway out - whiiirrrrrrrr - makes my heart skip a beat everytime. I've found that if I hold the shifter back (pretty hard), and then *slowly* engage the clutch to back up, it'll pop that last little bit into place. Then I can back up no problem.
I haven't had any problems with 1-2 yet, knock on wood...
I just went through this with 4th gear in mine. I put in a new clutch, pressure plate and flywheel. If I drove easy it was fine, driving hard it would grind to 4th. I had it torn down by Rockland trans and it ended up being trashed inside. I ended up buying a new trans. not cheap.

Sounds like mine is a carbon-copy of yours. Maybe this is just the nature of the beast?
