There is no set mileage on an alternator, they usually go around 100K though.

It shouldnt take more than about 30min to change an alternator.

The alternator itself can be gotten cheaper than 250, autozone, advance both carry it.

In Washington, try NAPA or Schucks. I picked up one for my 85 at Schucks with life time warranty. I would try NAPA first (better product) but when mine went out I was limited to Schucks. About $150 or so...couple of years ago.

Easy to replace...take neg cable off battery, remove serp. belt, uubolt bracket holding alternator and remove all wires from alternator. Reverse to install. About 20-45 minutes depending on the tools you have and past experience.

GOOD LUCK from a native Washingtonian...we don't tan...that is rust!

Look in the yellow pages and find any auto electric shop. They should rebuild it for around $50.00 . Any alternator you will buy @ Autozone is also rebuilt, except they are much higher. My guy rebuilt mine and even put fresh paint on it.

I just put a lifetime gty one on from Autozone. Just over a hundred dollars. It was the easiest alternator replacement I have ever done. 20 min.

Actually that sounds about right for a dealer job, considering dealer markup and flat rate.

I got an AC Delco for my '88 at a local shop for $130 and installed it in about 1/2 hr.

BTW, mine went at about 115k miles.
