Check the fuel pressure, both at idle and under load. Check or replace the fuel filter if the pressure starts to drop. Fuel pump replacement is a good project for a beginning DYIer. It is a piece of cake. Make sure you replace the intake screen (sock) when (if) you do the pump.
what kind of pressure should i be looking for and what is the process of changing the pump
I don't have the specs for an '86. My guess is that the fuel pressure should be in the mid 30# range. The invesment in a factory service manual, www.helminc.com will save you a lot of money in repairs.
The fuel pump gets removed from the top of gas tank through the hole left by removing the filler neck from the tank.
You didn't mention why you suspect the pump. The main thing to check, pressure wise, is if the pressure drops under load and increased demand.
i am getting ready to change the filter but if this does not cure the problem i will change the pump do have to take the tank out of the car to get the filler neck off

Are these manuals on CD's?.. or are they 3000 pages of paper? does any one have the cd version?
NO! That is why it is such a simple job. Just remove the the 4 torx headed screws holding the hinged filler door on, remove (by prying) the rubber "spill bib" and the filler neck screws are exposed.
