I have an 85 4+3. And ever since I had some parts changed out in the transmission, I no longer need to pull up on the reverse lever when putting into reverse--??? thats weird, I thought reverse was in the Exact position as 1st was, but someone told me its just to the left of 1st, cause it would seem the lever on the **** would allow reverse to overide 1st. Sometimes I get a grinding noise while engaging it in reverse now. Also another problem, since I bought the car, it never had a reverse light come on, someone mentioned it being a bad switch--but I don't know where that would be located...Help me please!! thanks
As for the first part of the problem regarding the movement of the handle, I can't remember. I pulled my 4+3 a long time ago and can't remember.
As for th ereverse lights, if all lights don't work, including the sides, and the bulbs are good, then it probably is the reverse switch on the trans. Is located on the OD part of the trans. I can't help any further than that cause I don't have my shop manuel with me, I'm at work.
Someone else will chim in...
The purpose of the reverse lock out-or having to pull up on the lever for reverse is to keep you from accidentally hitting reverse instead of first. I suspect you have a linkage problem. I can't remember the syncros all that well, but useally if you have a new clutch and pressure plate adjusted properly and you experience grinding or popping out of gear-it's a syncro problem. Syncros are cheap and when going through a manual tranny it's a sin not to replace them when it's out.
