Default Heads Coming Off

Overheating (again), white smoke in the morning, heads are coming off. If the heads are cracked, can they be welded? If the car is stock and new heads are required, are ported heads in order? Finally, looking for recommended sources for new heads. Thanks.

Don't know what yr. you have, but you either have cast iron heads-early C4 or aluminum 86 and later. Both can be welded BUT I'd prefer going with new-cost wise, and not having to worry about how good of a job they did would lead me to new. If you go new or even the repair route-it's the time to do a porting job.

If you havve a cracked head or bad head gasket the smoke would be all the time not just in the morning.
Are you losing alot of antifreeze? Do you have to add alot of water to the radiator?
Alot of things can make it overheat.
I just bought a nice pair of heads from the engine store .com.$499 plus shipping.

Year info would be nice, but GM issued a Bulletin, #89-314-6 applicable to '87 - '89, - Intake manifold gaskets are faulty. If you're head gaskets were really bad, it would run like crap, but if you have an early aluminum head L98, check #7, that's where most seem to fail.

If you are going through the trouble of pulling off the heads, I would DEFINATELY upgrade to aftermarket

Sorry, it's a '95. I don't have to add a lot of water but additions have become more frequent overtime. The coolant was analyzed and found to contain exhaust (don't ask me how). There is no coolant in the oil (yet). I think I had a (small) head gasket leak when I bought the car as it has always needed coolant additions but it never leaked on the ground. Thanks for the tip on finding new heads.
