I posted this in the audio forum with no responses...so here goes.
I am preparing to do some "battery disconnected" maintenance on my recently aquired 92 convertible with Bose Gold system. I was told that radio would "lock up" if the battery is disconnected. No mention of this in service manual. What should I do here?
Thanks in advance
Harry K. Evans
I have disconnected the battery on my 91 on many occasions with no ill effects to the Bose (except for resetting the stations). I don't think anything changed for 92.
Had a problem with my 90 locking up. Check the face of the radio & see if you can find a label relating to lock up or something. 90 may have been the last year they had the lock feature. It can be expensive going to tghe dealer to have the radio unlocked, I know, expensive too.
If it's not in your owners manual you may be OK. It's worth checking out.
There is a security feature for the 90's Bose. It can be activated, which means you have to program a series of numbers, or the feature can be deactivated, meaning nothing will happen when you disconnect the battery. This feature is explained in the owners manual. If your owners manual does not mention it, likely not there. For Model Year 90, might be wise to deactivate this feature. Less of a pain when doing any work. Who steals parts off a 90?
And yes, this can be a pain to correct if the code is programmed and one doesn't know the sequence after connecting power.
I strongly recommend any C4 owner read the appropriate owners manual, cover to cover. There are some strange features associated with the later cars. My favorite is the audio boost above a certain speed, I thought my hearing just got better above 4000 RPM. Darn books.
Disconnecting the battery will not cause any problems with the radio outside of losing any pre-programmed station pre-sets or the clock losing its settings.
It's always a good idea to turn the radio off before disconnecting the battery. That way when you re-connect the battery there is less chance of any immediate draw from the battery and the antenna will not go up.
There is no description of any anti-theft lock programming procedure in the 92 owners' manual for any of the different radio options that were offered in 92.
