I'm new to the forum but a long time corvette owner. I was in the process of changing the Clutch in my six speed all was going smoothly until I attempted to remove the tranny from the bell housing. The it seems that the tranny does not want to seperate from the bell housing not wanting to force it I went to the bell housing and tried to pull it back from there. Still stuck. Is there a trick to getting the tranny to release from the bell housing or do I need to really force it ? This is the first six speed I have worked on and it's becoming quite frustrating. I was hoping that I could do the work myself but the way it's looking I may have to put it back together and drag her down to a garage.
You still have bolts holding it to the engine.
Did you get the 2 top bolts,.... They are the hardest to get to. Sometimes it is easier to get them from the engine bay. To get them from the bottom,... use a socket on 2->3" of extension. When all the bolts are out,... the engine and bell housing will seperate pretty easily.
I'm pretty sure that I got all the bolts as I have removed the ditributor and lowered the engine and tranny a little. Both the bell housing and the tranny do come back a bit enough that there is a little space but thats it. I have to work to even get it that far

The ZF tranny is very heavy and it is bound up. Make sure you removed the four chrome acorn nuts that hold the shifter up. It may look as though the shifer will just slip down out of the hole but it is actually bolted up. After you remove the shift **** and remove the console plate, you will see the four nuts. I bet any money you did not remove those. Make sure you have a good tranny jack because as I have said it is heavy. Also make sure the shifter is in third. That is a good angle to get the tranny down and back at the same time.
I agree with the others....check to see that all the bolts are removed. It should come loose but you may want to have someone in the driver's seat push the clutch pedal in and out while you pull the tranny.
This works also for re-installing the tranny when lining up the input shaft with the pilot bearing.
Goodluck and what kinda clutch disc and flywheel are you going to be using?
Oh yeah, welcome to the forum!
That was the next thing I was going to try. I had thought that there may have been some tension on the clutch so I'll try putting the clutch slave back on and putting it under pressure. The only reson I took the slave off was that in the manual I have thats one of the first things they tell you to take off. As far as the type of clutch I'm putting in I'm not sure yet. Any sugestions ?
The reason for the change is that my cats backed up. Not realizing that it was something as simple as that I drove it to the shop. Well the added pressure caused the China wall to fail and I developed an oil leak onto the tranny. Clutch slips. Got progressively worse. This project has for me been a slow one but I'm in no real rush to have the car back on the road. My thougth is the less I drive it the better. Even though I love it.
Thanks for the advise I'll give that a try and thanks for the kind welcom to the forum
