Is the 94 Opti a 2nd generation unit? meaning, is it of the robust type not as prone to failure of the elements as earlier units? Just trying to decide what the life of a 49K mile Opti will be...and if I should save up for that Delteq system...
Sorry...the 94 optis were the same as the '92s. They can have the vacuum lines attached to help reduce condensation...but the innerds of the unit are the same.
So far as the expected life...i've heard of them going anywhere between 50K and 120K. I had to replace the factory opti at ~120K, but only got ~80K out of the replacement. But you SHOULD have plenty of warning before it completely goes.
I would run it untill it dies. I put 144k miles on my 92 before it died. I replaced it with a new ac delco unit. $299 from sam taylor buick. It looked like they changed the gasket material on the new units. I think it should last long after the rest of the motor needs a rebuild.
The 1996 was a 2nd generation opti and I think the 1995 was also but
not sure. Drive yours until it dies. You will have plenty of notice prior
to death.

I disagree. Would you go 144k on a regular distributor without replacing the cap and rotor?
I replaced mine recently at about 68k. I am now getting 5 mpg better than before.
No signs of opti problems until the bearing started making noise. Well, unless you count the poor mileage. But that wasn't a sign of opti problems, because it was on the low side of normal (15-16 mpg) and everybody on here says "If your opti is bad you'll know it" so I waited until my water pump failed to replace it. Turned out it was the opti bearing not the water pump bearing that was making noise, so my opti did finally tell me it was bad, but after I don't know how many years of actually being a problem.
Like a lot of parts that people don't bother replacing until they die (O2 sensors in particular), it doesn't just work perfectly and then die one day, it deteriorates over time. HP MPG and emissions will worsen with the deterioration.
