Default OBD II Question

If a code is set and check engine light comes on and the problem is corrected, how long does it take for the code to clear and the check engine light to go out? Thanks in advance, Guy

remove the negative cable on the battery for about 10 min and it will clear.

just FYI, you have OBD-I, not II.

if you set a code, the light will also go out if the ECM finds the faulted input operating normally again for a given time period. however, when the light goes out in this way the code will still be stored on the ECM until you pull battery power as TM-96CE mentions.

Just curious, but will pulling the fuse for the ECM accomplish this too?

If you fixed the problem, the light will go out immediately. The code will still be stored in the ECM. You can pull the fuse to the ECM and it will clear, but you will not know it, because the light will already be out, unless you have a scanner.

Thanks everyone, the light has gone out but the code is still stored. I will try pulling the bat. cable. Thanks, Guy
