the reason I'm asking is I'm swapping in a 400 and the sensor thread holes are different sizes I'm using early style heads. will I be able to find a compatible sensor that will fit the bigger holes?
As stated, one is a switch for the aux fan and the other is the temp gauge sending unit (sensor). If you don't care about those functions, they aren't "necessary". Since they are pipe threads, you can probably use pipe bushings to adapt to larger holes.
I just did tha same thing.I bought brass fittings from NAPA, the local auto parts store.Thay had them in stock.
Getting the old plugs out of the old head is hard. You need to heat them till red hot with acedeline torch.

well my temp sensor wire got melted on the header and the plastic on the it is also cracked and likes to fall off. thas how the wire got burnt. where does the wire go to? is it the fan switch under the Master Cylinder? is it a normal part that any parts store would have on stock?

The sensor wire goes to the temp gauge in the dash. I would expect you would find it an an auto parts store.
=88421VETTE] thanks Jim will you be at RMR this friday? I'll be there won't be racing though
I plan to be there. The car hasn't been running up to snuff, lately, and the driver has been doing worse. Look me up.
The wire off the fan switch, circuit 335, is brown. It is spliced with a tan wire from the compressor at a connector. After making it's way through a couple of other connectors, it ends up at terminal "B" on the fan relay as a green/white wire. The fan relay is mounted on the inner wheel well, approximately below the master cylinder.
