Hi Guys, the a/c controller on my 88 has a problem where under no certain circumstances the temp display and mode indicator lights go out for a period of time and then come back on later. The a/c continues to run and I think you can still control it but you have no lights to show what you are doing. I have removed the control panel and inspected the connections and don't see any obvious problem. Sometimes tapping lightly on the front of the panel will restore the lights but sometimes I just have to wait for it to come back on its own. Has anyone seen this problem?

This is normal for the 86-89 controler. You can remove it take the two clips off of it and pull the face off. There is a board with several finger contacts on it. Take a pencil eraser and go over the contacts and clean them. Most times this will fix the problem.
On my 88 the C68 did/does the same - I tried the rubber eraser trick about 4 times but no improvement so I laid some fresh solder on each finger on the board - very easy.
That fixed it -The display worked fine until my CD instal, I must have knocked the blue plug at the back that connects to the fingers and now it usually comes on after 30 mins !! I'm going to go back in and give the terminals in the plug a clean too.
As you say, the climate control still works, you just have no display. I keep meaning to look at the circuit diagram and see which pin is the display - but I doubt it will be that simple.
If the contacts you are cleaning are gold plated, DO NOT use an eraser on them, use a soft cloth and some alcohol. The plating is very thin and an eraser could remove some gold. Then you will have serious connection problems forever!!!
