I believe those are the words Lars Grimsrud used to describe what you might find when you open up that shroud and prepare for a thorough radiator cleaning. per the tech tip https://www.corvetteforum.com/techti...D=53&TopicID=2
Well, my temps were looking bad. Everything was fine at 60+ mph, but once back in the city the temp would just keep on climbing. Now before I claim this as a fix, it was probably a stuck open thermostat, since the car took a long time to warm up, so I changed it too. But here is what I found when I opened up the shrowd and took to the radiator.
Well, I cleaned it and straightened all the fins and the R&R wasn't what I call a 15 minute job, more like 15 hours... cause I'm kinda new at it. But now the temp guage rises steadily to just below half range and stays there even in city stop & go traffic.
Thanks to lots of folks discussing temp problems lately
Actually, I believe the thermostat was at the heart of the problem, but cleaning the radiator and straightening the fins (impossible to do installed) surely improved the efficientcy of the system.
Simple. Just remove a few bolts that hold the shroud to the car, upper and lower radiator hoses, trans cooler lines, and the air intake/maf and you should be able to pull it right out.
Yours was clean!! I started running VERY hot with my 93. I ended up replacing my radiator...it was soooo gunked up (maybe 5% of the surface, you could see light through). New radiator...ran nice and cool. Sucks I replaced the radiator 2 weeks before I got rid of it. But, my replacement is treating me well.
quikzilver,
Nice to see you still hanging around the C4 section, even after moving over to the C5.
Larry
Well, the C4 section is still a lot more fun. You can only discuss BSM removal (Body Side Moldings) and floor mat options for so long. Besides, I owned my C4 for 5 years and did most of the work on it, so any tips I can pass on will hopefully save someone's knuckles from donating more blood to their vehicle.
BTW, this is a wave for all of you.
....see C5 owners do wave to C4 owners.

I had a bunch of crap in between my AC condensor and radiator too.
If you take a good look at how the AC condensor fits in the shrouding, you can see why. I cut foam rubber insulation strips to seal around the left, top and bottom of the condensor and a rubber flap to close the big gap on the right end of the condensor. Also sealed around the radiator. Now all the air the come in the cooling air inlet on the front of the car goes through the AC conddensor and radiator, not around them.
Seling around the condensor dosen't hlp cooling, but it keeps the crap from getting past the condensor. Sealing around the radiator does help cooling. Any air that gets past the radiator isn't helping cooling and it is also lowering the air pressure in front of the radiator atad which also reduces flow. It's not a big difference, but our cooling systems need all the help they can get.
