Default Engine Mods and Exhaust Heat

With my setup (please see sig), I noticed the engine heats up VERY quickly (in like a minute). The coolant temps are perfectly normal, and stay that way, about 200 degrees maximum on start/stop driving around town.

The heat thats generated out of the exhaust (headers) is ALOT hotter than it was before the mods (other than exhaust) were installed. In fact, some melting at one of the plug boots has already occurred (ordered some protective material for this), in less than 70 miles put on.

Fuel pressure is about 39 psi with the FMS 24# injectors.

Question: does a larger cam like my LPE 219 generate alot of engine heat, is this normal?

You can smell a little fuel, although there are no leaks anywhere. With mods like mine, is this normal?

Otherwise, all else is fine so far. I hope to make a post about my new setup in the next day or so, all the issues had/has to be worked thru.

Thanks! Brad

It's the headers. They are carrying about the same heat as before, but they are only 1/8th of an inch thick (being generous) versus the old cast iron lumps.

Get some header wrap or something like that.

Are your headers ceramic coated, insided and out?

If not a set of coated headers will drastically reduce underhood temps. It could also be running a little lean which will make it run hotter. Another thing to do would be to get some MSD plug wires. They handle the heat better than any brand I've ever seen.

I was running real rich which created backfires in the pipes on overrun. It was heating my headers up pretty good and my floor boards were roasting. Fixed the A/F and it is less hot.

no timeslips, only 70 miles since rebuild, so engine needs broken in

my Hookers are coated externally as well as internally, by HPC.

i'll have to go to a dyno and get some data, and run it past Jesse to see what kind of tweaking needs done to the chip.

one thing though.......over time, does a QUICK warm-up indicate that i'll be running hot later on? before my mods, temps were cool. they're up a bit by about 20 degrees with the beefier cam - assuming the cam & high lisft has something to do with more heat to begin with.
