I just changed the inline fuel filter on my 87. Noticed a canister like part in the return line right above the inline filter. The manual does not show it. Does anyone know what it is and what function does it perform. Again it is in the return line just above the fuel filter.

The part you are referring to is as scorp says, a dampener. It is an 87 only item as far as I recollect. Later models have a different device as part of the fuel pump/in tank assembly. It is basically a 'large' fuel filter in the fuel return pipe. I think the part number is AC GF62N and is about $30.
My 87 is currently off the road, but it is on my shopping list to change before it goes back on. I think 17 years is a good life for a filter, albeit in the return line, which should in theory be 'clean'.
