Default Speedo Error

Bastet44's 1987 coupe has a problem... well, many problems... but this one is puzzling us.

The speedo is off.

A bit of history - the car was dirt cheap and has a salvage title. It was a rebuild after theft recovery. We have no clue what was stripped off of it, or who the idoit savant was who reassembled this poor thing.

However, the speedo is reading WAY off. as much as 4-5mph at an indicated 30mph!!!

This is what I "think" is wrong:

The car is equipped with the correct 2.59 rear end. Since it was a rebuild, someone installed the transmission from a 3.07 rear gear equipped car. Does this make sense?

Thanks!

A 3.07 car uses a different Vehicle Speed Sensor than a 2.59 or 2.73 car. The plastic gears on the speed sensor and tail shaft are different too.

It's the VSS (speed sensor) in the tranni. I have a '90
and my speedo just went crazy one day after hitting a nasty
pothole. Turned out to be the VSS, which by the way had been discontinued by GM. With the help of a dealership, I found only 3 locations in the US that had the part and it was for certain gear
ratios (3.07, 3.33, and 3.45 ?? I think). You'll have to get the
part number for the 2.59 and order that particular sensor.

As Bluevette stated, the plastic gears may be different as well,
but I didn't have to worry about that since it was a stock replaement.
