I just replaced the black cover on the top of my throttle body with a nicer one. But I cannot figure out the function of the cover. When removing it, the only thing I see below is maybe one opening (is this related to the IAC). Otherwise, the space below the cover was fairly clean except for what looked like a bit of gum or varnish. So why not just have a casting with an integrated cover?

I was wondering this as well. As far as I can tell it is just part of the casting. My car came with a throttle body airfoil and the other end of it was inside this hole (actually still is, because i tried to remove it but the screw was jammed in there :
After thinking about it for a while more (too much time on my hands), I wonder if it is possible that there was originally some device planned for the throttle body that would allow for an alternate path for air to enter the idle circuit (e.g., heater air coming off the exhaust or somewhere for cold climates). Perhaps this piece of the throttle body included some pipe or duct and the piece screwed onto the spot where there is now a cover. However, somewhere along the design it was decided this was not needed, hence the cover. Any thoughts? Anybody care?
