Default The MAF takes a dump

Going to work last night I decided to test the new tires and do a short little WOT run from a stop to about 50 mph. All was fine until I let up and she started to buck and snort but did make it the last ½ mile to work (no code). This morning it starts up but barley idles and is snorting and popping out the intake but as it warms up while bucking around the parking lot it gets a little better and I make it the short distance home. I’m about to hook up a timing light and give it a quick check when it occurs to me to try unplugging the MAF first. Well, it starts right up and idles fine and revs pretty much normally. The relays were replaced a year or 2 ago when I did have a MAF code. With all that said, I guess I’ll be shopping for a new one. Just thought I would throw this out there as a FYI.

Do you have or have acces to obd1 scan tool?

Before you shell out big bucks for MAF, you might want to check the values for the MAF and the IAC that the ecm is getting/sending

I had IAC getting way out of adjustment causing somewhat similar problems and relays can go bad even in just two years

Very good points! I need to do a thorough examination yet. No I do not have acess to a obd1 but I have always been on the fence about picking one up. It will be a few days before I have time to really look into it. Thanks for the Tips!

And no, I have not even taken the air tube off yet to look at the wire.

Before buying a new MAF see if you can buy or borrow one from a 3rd gen F-body car (the MAF from my '86 IROC works in my '88 Vette), just to be sure.

If your MAF is dead maybe you can pick up a used one at a good price.
