Default hypertech chip

So I'm sure this has been talked about a million times. But can someone give me any advise about getting a street runner chip on my 84? i figure i shouldn't go with the thermo master, since i don't have many mods. and since the navy hasn't made me a millionare yet, i don't feel like spending money on something that won't do anything.

many will steer you away from the hypertech.

i think if you post about what you want to get out of the new chip you'll get better advice. i'm not sure what a "street runner chip" is. to be blunt, don't expect miracles from your car with just a chip and no mods. (but i guess it wouldn't hurt to ask, right?) my personal advice: save up some cash for some hardware mods before you go for chips.

there is also a "C4 scan and tune" forum you can check out.

a few forum members also offer chip burning services. i'm sure some of the experts will chime in with some better advice.

it's too bad the forum archives are not fully up yet, there was a ton of information there.

again, let us know what you're looking for, and good luck!

Then don't buy a hypertech chip

A chip is NOT where you want to be putting money on a car with few modifications.

This one has been discussed before...do a search...and the answer always seems to be to not get a hypertech chip.

www.fasterproms.com did my chip. They take your mods and send you a chip. If you like, they can lend you their DIACOM software and cable and you can hook it up to your laptop and take readings and email it to them. They will send you a more fine tuned chip. This goes on till it is perfectly done to your system, whatever it is. The cost is $350. Later on, if you want to make more mods, the procedure is repeated for $150.

I have used their services and am very happy. The other person I would recommend is www.hitechmotorsports.com but they need the car there to do it and they are in MN.

If you don't have many mods on your car than you will likely see no change or possibly even a negative change. The only real benefit you'll see with the hypertech is that your fans will kick on at a lower temp, but you can buy a low temp fan switch alone for like $25. I'd stick with the stock chip until your level of mods requires you to get a custom chip burned.

To sorta illustrate this point I put a Jet stage II chip in my car when it was near stock. I then took it to the track for some comparison runs. My stock chip proved to be about .15 to .20 quicker than the Jet chip. I'd expect to see similar results on the hypertech.

I'm probably the only one on here who likes their Hypertech. I got the thermo master so I could go with the 160 stat and not mess up the ecu. My only mod was a loose converter. I have had this chip in for 10 years now and the delayed converter lock-up (4th gear only) function was worth it alone. With the chip I added the MAD fan kit so both condensor side and radiator side fans come on together. Today is 90 degrees and while driving in town the engine temp never got over 179, although I do flush the radiator and clean the leaves out every year. If I lost a few tenths in the quarter (like people claim) because of this chip, I'll never know. It still runs good as my driver.

I put a Hypertech chip in my '89 several years ago. Never had a problem. Oh well!

Most of these responses are from later model owners. While well meaning and accurate for THEIR cars, not all apply to a '84. For instance, a chip change will not affect the fan, on temp, because the ECM is not involved in the fan control on an '84. To my knowledge, there are no custom chip burners for the '84. The older, slower, ECM in our cars has not had the code, hacked, to the extent of the newer cars. Except for an off the shelf chip, the only way to get a custom program, is after an ECM conversion. Years ago, I bought a HyperTech ThermoMaster chip and the required 160* thermostat. Track testing, revealed that it slowed me down between a half and a full tenth in the 1/4 mile. I sent it back. Meanwhile, for the few modifications I DO have on a 160,000 mile, stock long block engine, my Crossfire keeps up with traffic, pretty well. I still have the stock ECM with the stock chip.

RACE ON!!!
