Default 4L80-E swap questions

I am thinking about putting a 4L80 or 4L80-E in my 94 LT1, in place of the 4L60-E. I know it can be done, but what all is involved? I guess I would need a custom tailshaft housing for the C beam to bolt up to. What about the overall size, is there any cutting of the car involved? Would you still use the 6 speed driveshaft and automatic yoke, as with the Dana 36-44 swap? I think John Meaney has a 4L80-E in his twin turbo C4, anybody else? I have been told by several trans builders that it is only a matter of time before the 60 gives up (with over 500 RWHP). It also seems I can get a fully built 80 for the same or less than a built 60. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Custom tailshaft for the custom C beam, custom driveshaft
probably a trans controller for the 4l80e, and maybe a flexible dipstick if the stock one for 4l80 doesnt work

as far as i know, nothing else needs to be done

A properly built 4L60 or 700R4 can take a lot of abuse. GM rebuilt mine and I shredded it by hooking it up to a LPE 383 making over 400HP and babying it all the way for 6 months. I went to www.rosslertrans.com, recommended by LPE, and the tranny lasted for 3.5 years with me beating on it several times a day. I drove that Firebird every day there was no snow on the ground and beat the hell out of it.

There is no such thing as a 4L80 (non E). You say the prices between the 4L80E and the 4L60E are similar? Does that include the core charge for the core you probably don't have? The last *I* heard, the 4L80E cores were still at a premium. On the other hand, the builder of MY 700R4 (4L60) claims it is good for 700+ hp. Most conversions, *I* have read about ran between $4000.00 and $5000.00.

RACE ON!!!

Why did you decide not to go with the 4L80E setup?

A couple more questions...
1) on a 94 auto, is there any modification needed to the underside of the body to fit the 80 in there?

2) will I be able to use the factory speedometer (is the signal the same?)

3) what is the 1st gear ratio of the 4L80E? Isn't it like 2.48:1?
How much will that affect acceleration compared to the 3.06 of the 4L60E?

Off the subject a little. Did you hear about the new 4L65 in the C6? 650lbft rating!
