Default 383 Update!!! The saga continues...

Ok, well....
Last time you tuned in, I had a decided to tear down the short block mostly just to determine what the pistons were (supposed to be forged)...
That tear down revealed not only hypereutectic pistons but a ton of other suprises. Including a crank that (in a supposed 5k miles) had unbelievable amounts of wear and the upper bearing caps had been worn down to a fat copper center section.

Now to where we are today:

Everything out of the motor and a fresh grind on the crank (taken down 10) reassmbly began.

Just tonight we put in the cam and crank and all the rods/pistons. Not bad for a first time. We couldn't degree the cam (LPE 213) because we are ditching the Pete Jackson silent gear drive and waiting on delivery of a Cloyes True Double Roller.

So the new setup:

350 4-bolt main
Scat Steel Crank (w/Clevite 77 P-series)
GM pink rods
Speed Pro Hyperuetectic Pistons
LPE 213 cam (w/ CC 812 lifters)
1.6 CC Magnum Roller Tip Rockers
Ported 113# Heads
Hi-Flow TPI setup (AS&M LTRs, accel base, ported plenum)
Dynagear Stock volume pump
Summit Track Oil Pan 7qt w/ pickup
LPE Long Tubes/ Y-pipe
Cloyes True Double-Roller
Stock 400 balancer/Centerforce Flywheel 153 tooth

I will hopefully update this post friday after all my remaining parts have arrived and hopefully the engine will be very close to completion including determining the correct pushrod length.

Wish me luck,
I am trying to make another engine that shows the TPI doesn't suck that much!

Your saga sounds uncannily familiar.

TPI's don't suck, they ROCK! The useable torque range unequivicably kicks azz!! As long as you match up the head/cam/intake combo, you are in for a fun ride. (I've got an SR 383 with a BIG hyd roller for road course use) Question, isn't the 400 balancer too big to fit in a C4? Good luck withthe rebuild!!

I am currently 325 miles into a similar rebuild. Look forward to low down, up front torque. Make sure you put a few hundred away for some drag radials!!!

You forgot to mention doing a line hone and having the balance of the rotating assembly checked. Upper half bearing wear (the half that sits in the block) isn't normal.

Wow, that is crazy.

You guys are right, there is a lot of stuff I forgot too though, like checking crank play and other things like that.

Keep mentioning them though, incase I do forget!
Thanks!
