Doing a complete rebuild on my 87 TPI engine w/ 6 speed manual. I would like input as to whether investing in a Hypertech computer chip would be worth it or if I would be just as well off to keep the stock unit. Engine will have stock TPI with Ford 24# injectors and a comp 08-502-8 roller cam (.488 / .495 lift) with all valve train components replaced out thru the springs. Stock heads and exhaust. Bored .040 over. Goal is 300 streetable HP. All advice greatfully considered.
A chip change won't help much in getting your L98 to 300hp (is that at the crank??). You will also need to do some exhaust & intake work.
Instead of doing the chip, install an AFPR to tune fuel flow at WOT, bump TPS base voltage to .65Vdc and maybe bump base timing a little. Install a low temp aux fan switch into the block below #1 & #3 spark plugs to bring the fans on around the 160deg T-stat.
The chip wont really add much power, it will add drivability and better idling. But, with a different cam, to have a perfect idle you will need a new CUSTOM chip.
Hypertech is crap, dont buy it, as are all the other 'generic' ones.
