Default Question on oil cooler hose..

Ok, this might be a stupid question, but I will ask it anyways.

I have an '85 Z51, and have the stock Oil cooler.

Since I've added Longtube Headers, my oil temp has gone up by 10 -15 degrees easy, as the oil coolar hose runs less than 1/2" next to the header collector.. I can not move it farther, I've tried.

I have looked into making some sort of aluminum 'shield' between the two, but have yet to come up with a good design that doesn't look like crap and wouldn't worry me about cutting into something or rattle.

What would happen if I wrapped the oil cooler hose tight in aluminum foil or heat wrap? (I don't want to wrap my headers themselves in heat wrap).

My hoses (steal braided) are wrapped in heat (resitant) tape where they run close to the header. Doesn't look bad and my oil runs relatively cool (for a twin-turbo).

I had the same concern when I installed a Derale oil cooler in place of the stock one on my 86. I ended up wraping the collector and the oil hose and so far haven't had a problem.

I wouldn't use aluminum foil. Although you'd think it would reflect heat, in fact the foil will become quite hot from being in such close proximity to the header and it will then become a constant source of heat to the hose, and thus the coolant running through the hose. Remember the three ways that heat is transferred; radiation, convection and conduction.

My coolant hoses actually carry oil, not anti-freeze/water as the stock one does, but that doesn't make a difference.

I just returned yesterday from a 3,000 mile trip in my Vette and the oil temps remained in the mid-220 to mid 230 range virtually all the time, even when the outside temps were 96 degrees F.

Just my thoughts.

Jake

Use silicone hose over the steel braid or silicone tape wrapped over the section of hose in close proximity to your headers. One source for silicone tape is Radio Shack. A 3' roll of 1" tape is $3.19. It could take 5-6 rolls to cover with two layers (depending on diameter and length of braided oil hose)and it would still be less expensive and easier to install than the silicone hose.

Not a stupid question at all! Your filter is probably getting most of the radiated heat from the headers. As Jake mentioned, aluminum is one of the BEST conductors of heat. (why do you think they use it for fry pans?!) Having said that, it can be used to create air gaps, which will help minimize radiated heat. I consider getting some type of heat shielding from a company like Thermo Tec. They make many different types, configurations of heat protection. I hate to think of how many $$$$ worth of that stuff I have on the car.
