Guys I need some help on selecting fuel injectors for an 89 I am helping a buddy with. I have saw posts about ford injectors and also am wondering about accel injectors. Has anyone out there replaced there injectors on an 89 and if so which manufacturer did you select?
I've used Accel injectors, had them for the past four years and they've been great.
This will probably start the "Accel" flurry of people claiming to know somebody who's had problems with them, but a lot of us actually have them and the latest consenus is that there's nothing wrong with them.
Ford injectors are rated at a lower pressure, 39psi I believe, so using them at the same size as your stock ones will have you running rich.
Send your injectors to SunCarb and have them remanufactired into any size you want (or from their stock) and have them flow-matched. You won't believe how well a set of flow-matched injectors run. Factory injectors aren't flow-matched.
The service costs $200 plus return shipping and includes all the seals necessary for installation. www.suncarb.com
Ford injectors in a Chevy is sacrilege.
FWIW,
Send your injectors to SunCarb and have them remanufactired into any size you want (or from their stock) and have them flow-matched. You won't believe how well a set of flow-matched injectors run. Factory injectors aren't flow-matched.
The other source that many forum members have used was Rich @ Cruzin Performance, however based on some past reading on the forum, most of the rebuilders seem to shy away from the Multec brand injectors used in the 89s and have recommended that they simply be replaced with <insert brand name> injectors.
The Multecs in my 89 became shorted (3 of 8) and I tried to get Rich @ Cruzin to fix them. No luck! I have to agree with the comments of BigJim on the bad Multecs! I bought a set of used Bosch injectors from a low mileage 88 and had Rich check them out. They were good and now they are in the engine.
I am working this exact problem now. I had a shorted Multec burn out my ECM, so I replaced that, and put in a set of Bosch D9Bs. They run OK, it starts very badly, and mpg is reduced . Overall, I am not happy with it and am working out the better solution.
My ride is an 89. That is the first year they dropped the cold start injector, and went to multecs. Going to the Bosch may be the cause of the hard starting - it may be the Bosch need the cold start injector for help. I can't figure anything else doing it, the fuel pressure and all are good.
I am considering the Accel injectors, and was looking for someone else that tried them in an 89. It sounds like 3XBlack had good luck with them.
I was also thinking about the Holley Stealth Ram (as long as I was in there, why not?) - Any experience with that out there??
My 89 had 4 shorted injectors after 97,000 miles. put in Delcos, and found the intake loose. Car runs great. A little pricey. Look for someone to get them at cost. I did not want any problems!
