Default Engine oil temp gets to 240*

My engine oil getss to 240*. THAT, in my book, is way to hot.
What are my options, and how can i fix this problem.

(Runs ruogh and occasionally dies on me. Almost sounds like the engine is seizing and not getting oil. Yet dipstck reads full.

What does the ECM read (scantool) and what does the gauge read? Gauge and ECM should be about the same within 20 deg. Compare them to the 240 and see if it comes close. If so, find out where the problem lies. If not, your oil temp system might have a problem

If you are using synthetic oil, it isn't a problem, I've got as high as 260 while driving it hard.

A couple of days ago I created a thread about a 3,000 mile trip I just completed in my Vette and the oil temps I ran during varying conditions. Check it out.

Depending on the RPM the engine was turning during the times the oil reached 240F, you may not have any concern. I found that my oil temps were very sensitive to RPMs, but no nearly so much to ambient temps.

240 oil is not a big problem in itself, Dino oil doesnt break down until about 250, and synthetic at >300.

Coolant temps though at that point may need some addressing, I'd check to see if the fans are working and if they come on at 228 as they should, sounds like they are, but you should still check and also check to see if the thermostat is opening.

Flush the radiator, remove the radiator shroud and remove the debris between the condensor and radiator. Removing the shroud is the only way to do that correctly.

Id be looking closely at the coolant to see any brown spots that might indicate a head gasket problem that would also cause your poor running. Also the oil when you change it. Otherwise it may be time to check out the various sensors, but I dont know what year you have.

240 is like an extra one or two beads of sweat on your forehead.
It's ok unless you are allergic to sweat.

My vette stays up to 230. Maybe you should check if the cooling system is working alright. I've been told that coolant hoses can get gummy after a long while by the coolant. And it doesn't cool as good as it used to.

Default Engine oil temp gets to 240*

I know this may sound dumb, but our vettes are like vacuum cleaners and suck up all kind of debris. Have you cleaned out the plenum chamber between radiators?? I didn't know about it and found a tech article on the importance of this cleaning and my temperature dropped 40 degrees and yes I had about 2 to 3 inches deep of debris. Next I took the radiator out and cleaned it (all kinds of oily gunk on the fins) and sat down and straightened the fins out very carefully.
Good Luck,

The temp of my oil rarely gets over 210 and usually stays under 200. Is that bad?

That means you're not driving it hard enough. . Seriously it should be fine, although you want your oil temperature to get above 212 so that any condensation will evaporate.

180 to 190 sump temp is actually high enough (not that those are realistic C4 temps). If the sump is that hot, the oil gets hot enough in other parts of the engine to flash of any moisture.

You dont have to reach 212 to boil out condensates. Sufficient runtime at 180 or 190 will accomplish the same thing.

Mine runs at 230-240* when I am on a trip doing a steady 80 or so MPH....as soon as I slow down for a bit it drops to or below 220*...doesn't sound like you have a problem at all...btw, I use Mobil 1...10/30 weight oil...
