Default Please help: 1 fuel injector prob:

Good afternoon all,

Please help, after all my checking and messing. I have one fuel injector (drivers side, all the way up front) that for some reason isn't working.

While the car runs, I pulled off each wire-plug on the injectors, one at a time to listen for a change in idle. All injectors have that change except one! Also, I switched the injector I thought was bad, with another, and it's still the up front one that isn't working, so I know the injector is good.

This weekend, I cleaned the injectors, still no change on the one. The plug that it's controlled by is firing (unplugged the wire and tested outside of the cylinder). So the opti appears to still be working. However, the one plug that is off that injector, gets black as hell after just a few days, is that normal?

Also, gas milage is running about 7-8 mpg. While driving, gas almost flows out of the muffler. can someone please help me with this? I'm close to having all the probs worked on on this beauty, and this is the last one.

How can I test the plug going onto the injector?

Is it possible that the injector is working, and the plug is firing, but for some reason it can't fire inside the cylinder?

Are there relay's controlling the injectors or is it all in the computer?

She's a 93 with 98k on the clock.
Thanks all!

Have you checked compression on that cylinder? A leak down test is preferable but a simple compression test will show if there is sufficient compression to fire. I would also change that spark plug out. Sometimes one that fires outside will not fire under compression. One other thing you can check is to get a noid light and check the injector pulse on that cylinder as compared to the others; It could be stuck open.

You can get a Noid light at the local parts house that plugs into the injector harness. When you crank it over, the light should light showing you that if fact the ECM is pulsing that injector. The injector connector should be OK with the pulsing light. OR you can fire it up and put a log handle screwdriver on the injector in question. Put your ear on the handle and listen for the 'clicking' of the injector as it is being pulsed by the ECM..

Thanks guys,

I have changed out the plug, a few times actually. There seems to be a bit of oil in the cylinder. I have yet to check the compression, but have the tester available, so I will do that one this evening hopefully. But the plug on that cylinder gets black after a few days. Still works, just looks like crap (Champion platnums)

From what I understand though, if there is not enough compression (by the way, how much is needed for fire?) then I could be looking at serious problems, correct?

Default One more thing:

I have performed the screwdriver test and she does click, just as loud as the others. There just isn't any idle change when I remove the wire-plug into the injector. I will say though that I am getting heavy gas smell.

Great... Sorry to hear. This has certianly been part of a huge list of things that are wrong or have gone wrong.. Well, on your friends, was he/she still getting fire through the cylinder? Was the car missing?

I had a similar problem I had spark and fuel, but no compression. I thought is was the rings, but found it was a cam problem. Do a leak down to check for leaks, also check the valve train for that cylinder.

I had a very similar problem, it was #8 for me (last pass. side injector). Turns out the intake manifold had one bolt loose and it was sucking oil from the intake valley enough to foul the plug completely and hence the unburned fuel smell. Created a bad vacuum leak too.

I went through hell trying to figure out why it ran so rough and it was such a simple fix, just tight up that bolt. Might be the case on yours?

It's hard to answer how much compression loss because it can be caused by several things. Valves, worn out lifter or cam lobe ,bent pushrod, broken rings , cracked piston etc. Usually a low compression cylinder will miss or " limp" at idle and start to fire as the RPM increases. Again , a simple compression check may tell the story. If it is low, try squirting some oil into the cylinder through the plug hole and re test. If the compression comes up significantly, it is a ring problem; if not , it is likely valve related. Either way, it needs to be repaired and will not be cheap.
Of course, a leak down test will reveal a lot more info like , you can sometimes hear where the leak is by listening to whether it is coming from ie. the crankcase or the intake or the exhaust. Also the leakdown test is way more sensitive than a simple compression test. All that being said if the compression is the culpret , the compression test should reveal it. Good Luck!
