Sounds like the opti to me. If it ends up being the opti and you don't want the dealer to mess with it I can help you with it.

Well I don't know...our 95's had the better opti's that usually don't give trouble as much, usually is around 80k miles or so when they start dieing. So, how many miles you got on yours?

if your gonna mess with the opti, you might as well do a full tune up... plugs, wires, cap etc.

ok men, here's the deal. i still havent had time to dive into it but hopefully tomorrow i'll get some help on what the prob is. the car completely and randomly chooses when it's gonna run like crap. sometimes it's just a little miss and sometimes it's bad enough to make the car jerk. it almost always happens from 2500 to 4000 rpms. but then again, randomly it'll run like a top. i mean scream down the road. i dont get it. a week before it started getting so bad, which it's getting progressivly worse over time, i had a pretty tight run and had it twisted up pretty high. i think i hit the rev limiter, first time if i did. no funky noises, or nothing. no knocking, or ticking. just a miss sometimes. so please tell me waht it COULD be and what i will have to do if it is that case. as for scanning, i'm headed to autozone tomorrow to see if they can help. please help men, it hurts to have my car running bad.

I'd just do a full tuneup: plugs, wires, cap, cleaning the right stuff, etc... it's cheap, can be done fast, and may solve your problem... My 85 ran real rough when i bought it... A full tuneup made an unbelievable difference

That does sound like Opti trouble.

Try to watch the vehicle temperature and the outside temperature. What can happen when the Opti goes bad, is that it only goes bad in certain conditions. Weather and temperature affect the computer's choices for timing and when the Opti is starting to go bad, it'll show up at seemingly random times.

Note, that at the start of failure, it might not set codes. Sometimes it has to get pretty bad. The computer counts errors, and if it's just starting to go bad, it may not generate enough errors in a short enough period of time to set the code.

Also, timing is more critical at higher RPMs so it would be more noticable.
