Default Power antenna quit. Second problem ever. Help

I have had RedZoom ('96 LT1) for over two years and the only problem until now has been a tire pressure sensor that died. My antenna is stuck in the up postion. There is a whirring noise when I turn the radio on and off, but no movement. What's going on? Remember, I am mechanicaly challenged.

Thats the antenna drive motor trying to raise or lower your anntenna. The bad news is that the nylon insert that is inside your antenna mast and connectes to the antenna motor is broken. good news is that the motor is still good and you can replace the antenna mast. This isn't that hard of a job. 1st - go get a Chilton or Haynes manual. 2nd - order a antenna repair kit #40723 (ecklers). 3rd- be patient and remove the antenna drive motor and mast from the car after the new one arrives. 4th - remove the mast from the drive motor unit and reinstall the new one in the reverse order and re-install on the car.

Or buy a new one, about 100 bucks.

Chris9, thanks for the great info. Thanks to SunCR for the $100 motivation to try your suggestion.

There is a REALLY good write-up for replacing the antenna in the C4 Tech Tip section. Print it out and follow it. Pay attention to the warnings about watching where the parts go as you take things apart. The job is a bit of a pain to do because you are reaching up most of the time, but it doesn't require any special tools and shouldn't take more than 90 minutes tops. Looks a lot harder than it is. I just finished doing this on my 88 and have some digital pics of the process if you need. Just email me.
