4+3 locking out the 1st-2nd shift

4+3 locking out the 1st-2nd shift
**Can anyone refer me to someone who has experience with the 4+3?
The 4speed in my 87 conv. intermittently locks out the 1-2 shift...cannot get into 1st or 2nd at all or is very hard to get in. When in this cond., it also feels like there is a drag on the car, like brakes or maybe reverse gear drag? Pretty sure it's not the brakes, however.
Problem occurs at various times, after backing out of a parking place...downshifting from third when coming to a light....
Unit has had regular service and was serviced within last 3K miles.
Cannot see anything binding, etc. on outside of tranny and am about to pull side plate off and to remove console panels to check shifter unit.
Any suggestions, similar experience information would be greatly appreciated....
